Are IHG points worth it?

I am always a bit on the fence in terms of IHG and redeeming points, and have had mixed luck with redeeming points and here is the general reason why. Many hotel chains, like Hilton, allow you to pay with points as long as their is a room available*. IHG works differently and hotels set how many rooms can be reserved using points. Many times I have gone to book a room at an IHG hotel and there is plenty of availability but not for paying with points. Other times, almost no availability and I can pay with points.

Most recently I got great value booking the Mount Pleasant Hotel Indigo near Charleston South Carolina. I was able to use points to book the room and took advantage of IHG’s 4th night free perk when paying with points to add further value to my stay. In addition I received a corner room upgrade and free table service breakfast for two each day due to my Diamond status.

My experience thus with IHG is very mixed and frustrating at time but an offer this good is hard to pass up.
